GERMINATION INFORMATION

SEED DORMANCIES Some seeds contain dormancies which inhibit germination. The process we recommend to over come these dormancies is listed in this catalogue as pre germination seed treatment. To encourage even & rapid germination we recommend this treatment is carried out prior to sowing.

KEY TO SEED TREATMENT

FS Fresh seed sow on receipt. Seed marked FS can not be stored, it must be sown on receipt
WS Water soak for 24 hours prior to sowing.
DS Sow seed direct from packet & keep moist until germinated
MS

Seed marked MS is perishable and can not be dry stored. After collection & cleaning we placed seed in cold moist storage and dispatch packed in moist sawdust. On receipt of this seed it should be placed in cold stratification until spring when it will be ready to plant. Seed received after spring should be sown on receipt.
S
Cold stratify for number of days specified. eg. S 28. water soak overnight spread seed between layers of wet absorbent paper seal in a plastic bag with plenty of air space. Keep moist in refrigerator at 2-5 deg C for 28 days.
SW
Warm stratify for number of days specified. Prepare seed as for cold stratification but keep moist at 20/30 deg C.
HW

Pour boiling water over seed, leave to cool & soak for 24 hours. Sow the seed that has swollen, repeat the process for the remaining seed. Some species with very hard seed coates may require several treatments before they will respond. Scarifaction with sand paper before treatment may be beneficial in speeding up the process in some species.
