Leptospermum scoparium High-NPA-Waikato - Manuka seed from high MGO, DHA honey collection area Waikato NZ(NZ Native)
This seed is collected in Waikato NZ from wild populations of naturally occurring Leptospermum scoparium in an area were honey is harvested with high levels of MGO (Methylglyoxal), DHA (dihydroxyacetone) The Manuka from this area is an unnamed variety of Leptospermum scoparium.
MGO (Methylglyoxal) Scientific research has now proven that the naturally occurring compound methylglyoxal is what gives Manuka honey its unique Antibacterial Activity. It is found in high quantities in only some New Zealand Manuka Honey
DHA (Dihydroxyacetone) A Naturally occurring compound that is found in high quantities only in Manuka flower nectar and honey. A precursor for Methylglyoxal.
Small shrub or small tree with flaky bark and bearing masses of oval pointed leaves and white flowers. Leaves hard, 5-20mm long by 1-8mm wide, prickly. Fruit a dry 5-7mm wide capsule.
Manuka Honey Research
Methylglyoxal (MG) and dihydroxyacetone (DHA) have become linked with manuka honey. They are strongly related to the activity of manuka honey, which we measure as NPA/UMF. This article gives some explanation of how the activity of manuka honey is measured, and how MG and DHA fit with this.
